Bits with Shanks
Bits with shanks create leverage on the mouthpiece, pressure on the poll and under the jaw. The longer the shank the more severe the bit can be. However, the severity and quickness of the bit can be adjusted by loosening the curb strap. The quickness of any bit with shanks will depend on two things. First the shape of the shank. Is the bit shank straight or curved as in a grazing bit? If it curves to the rear it will not be as quick as if the shank is straight. If, for example, you are using a grazing bit and you loosen the curb strap, the bit will react slow to your hand movements.. The more you tighten the curb strap the faster the bit will react. Be aware of the conformation of your horses mouth and jaw it will help you determine what type of bit will best suit you and your horse. |
